Most detergents don't whiten your clothes, they trick your eyes.
Optical brighteners are fluorescent dyes designed to stay behind on fabric after rinsing. They don't lift a single stain, they absorb UV light and re-emit it blue so the fabric reads whiter to your eye.
Optical brighteners, also sold as fluorescent whitening agents, are dyes. Not cleaning agents. Dyes. They absorb ultraviolet light your eye can't see and re-emit it as visible blue. Blue cancels the yellow tones that build up in white fabric with age, so your brain reads the fabric as brighter and whiter than it is.Same principle as a blue rinse on grey hair. Nothing gets removed. The colour just shifts.
Brighteners only work if they don't rinse out.
A cleaning agent lifts soil and leaves with the water. A brightener is built to do the opposite. It binds to the fibre and stays there, because the moment it goes down the drain it stops making your shirt look white.
So every wash leaves a deposit, and the deposit doesn't reset between cycles. It's why "brightening" detergents seem to work better over time. You're not getting cleaner clothes. You're getting a thicker layer of dye on your towels, your sheets and the shirt you're wearing right now.
Because whiteness sells, and dye is cheaper than cleaning power.
Optical brighteners don't remove a single stain. They don't touch odour. They do nothing for grease, grass, sweat or collar grime. They exist to make the result look better than the detergent actually performed, which is the cheapest way to win a comparison on a shelf.
They're also stubborn once they leave your machine. Brighteners break down slowly and standard wastewater treatment only partly removes them, so they carry through into rivers and lakes.
Which raises the obvious question. It's a dye that cleans nothing, is engineered to stay on your clothes, and doesn't break down after it's washed away. Why is it in your detergent at all?

Put a brightened white shirt under a UV light and it glows. That glow is the dye, not the clean.
It's a useful test, because it separates the two things detergent brands work hard to blur. A shirt can be visibly bright and still be carrying body oil, sweat and detergent film. Brightness tells you what's been added to the fabric. It tells you nothing about what's been taken out.
